Potomac Paddlesports is pleased to offer The British Canoe Union's (BCU) and American Canoe Association's (ACA) award system to qualified sea kayak students. Whether you just want to refine your skills, or eventually become a superstar instructor, these assessments are a great way to take your kayaking skills to the next level AND receive a skill rating in the process. Please come prepared by completing the prerequisite Potomac Paddlesports' lessons as outlined below. All Potomac Paddlesports' BCU and ACA assessments are coached by BCU Coach Level 3, A1*, ACA ITE Tom Nickels.

BCU 3 Star Assessment

The BCU 3 Star Sea Kayak Award is an environment specific award where individuals must reflect the capacity to journey in a sheltered sea environment as part of a group. This module offers one 7 hour assessment Successful completion of the assessment awards a BCU 3 Star rating..

2008 Dates: October 25
Location: Mayo Beach, Chesapeake Bay
Time: 8:00 AM
Duration: 7 hours
Class Ratio: 4:1
Prerequisites: Intermediate-Level paddling ability

ACA L-3 Assessment

The ACA L-3 Kayak Award is a 6 hour assessment Successful completion of this module awards a ACA L-3 rating. We will work on the following: Perfecting the strokes and rescues learned in our lessons and beginning to apply them in open water conditions; learning several new strokes and maneuvers such as sculling and hanging draws, draw on the move, bow rudder, low and high brace turns, and sculling for support; incorporating edging into your turning strokes; learning new rescues, including bow- and paddle-presentation Eskimo rescues, contact rescues/tows, and use of short and long tow lines.
